Mark Making with Little Learners

Girl drawing with egg shaped chalk crayons

We loved trying out the egg chalk crayons from Little Learners. They come in a set of six, with bright colours and lovely sensory shaping, just perfect for little hands to hold and create masterpieces.

What was really brilliant was the Mark Marking Programme which came with the chalk eggs. It contains a straightforward guide to guiding your child to make different types of marks and letters:

  • Soldier Marks
  • Rainbow Marks
  • Magic Marks
  • Monster Marks

Each section had a combination of basic lines but also letters, numbers and shapes to try out.

We’ve had jumbo chalks before, and usually my children would use them to draw faces or animals or general squiggles. Having the mark making guide meant that I could help my four year old daughter with doing something different, and she loved copying the shapes in the guide.

Initially we used the chalk crayons outside on our patio, but as the weather turned we also found that they were great inside too. Luckily we had a mini chalkboard to hand, I wouldn’t advise that you try them out on the floor or furniture though – although the chalk rubbed off easily, there was a bit of a dusty residue!

Little Learners don’t just sell educational products in their online shop, they also run messy play classes across the UK too! The focus of the classes is to teach early writing and mark making skills with a unique pre-writing programme. The programme centres around four fun mark maker characters – Lionel, Archie, Swirlo & Ziggy who all represent their own ‘mark’.  There’s also an opportunity for parents to open their own Little Learners franchise in their local area.
