In recent years grandparents have taken on more and more of an active role in helping to raise their grandchildren. Research from Age UK in 2017 estimated that 40% of grandparents have provided regular childcare, with a staggering 89% of those doing so once a week or more.
The benefits of grandparent-care are many. It can help parents to work or just have some non-child time, and it’s brilliant for the grandparents too. It can help to improve mental and physical activity, as well as helping to minimise loneliness and provide a sense of purpose.
