In a very surprising move, for a family who relied on sports activities and clubs pre-lockdown, we’ve really embraced the Great Outdoors recently. Our 7 and 4 year olds’ new favourite trip out is to venture up the ‘big hill’ for a spot of scenary gazing and tree climbing. However, there’s only so many times that we can make up a name for an unknown bird or bug without our kids catching on!
The Wildlife Trusts’ version of Top Trumps is brilliant, not just for being a classic family game, but also learning a lot more about the wildlife that’s sometimes right on our doorstep.
There’s a whole host of wildlife featured on the cards, from animals to insects and everything in between. There are some exotic species in there but also plenty of creatures to find in your local area. We’ve taken to taking the pack out with us as ‘spotter cards’ when we’re out and about, and they’re great for prompting conversations.
Each card features a beautiful photo, description and interesting fact as well as the scoring categories – rarity, speed, cuteness, ferocity and skill. We found that the scores were great number recognition practice for our 4 year old, and the facts were straightforward for our 7 year old to read aloud.
You can buy the UK Wildlife Top Trumps pack online on the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust website or at the Potteric Carr Nature Reserve in Doncaster. Your purchase will help support the vital work of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.
For more than 70 years, the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust have been protecting Yorkshire’s wildlife and wild places, including managing and restoring over 100 nature reserves. Their work covers land and sea; from hills and valleys, to beaches and city streets. Their programmes of events and engagement activities aim to encourage children and families to enjoy and experience the wildlife in the local area.
