Review ~ Higgidy Ready to Bake Meals

There’s something uniquely comforting about a pie. Even in the hottest of weathers it’s one of the ultimate comfort foods. And if you’re a fan of pies, then you’ll have heard of Higgidy – purveyors of posh pies but without the posh price tag. From humble beginnings down the road from me in West Sussex, they’re now a successful business employing 300 staff and offering a whole range of savoury offerings.

Their latest venture is ready to bake meals, with four delicious options to choose from:

  • Mushroom and Puy Lentil Cottage Pie with kale and butterbean mash
  • Roasted Cauliflower and Paneer Curry with carrot bhaji crust
  • Mac n Super Greens with crispy kale and pumpkin seed crumb
  • Roasted Aubergine and Pepper Gratin with cherry tomatoes

The portion sizes are generous at 365g, perfect for an indulgent meal for one, or for two as a side. Cooking time is 20-25 minutes in the oven but they’re not suitable for the microwave.

The Roasted Cauliflower and Paneer Curry was full of tasty flavours – the cauliflower is roasted in chilli and turmeric, and then teamed with paneer in a mild coconut sauce. The dish is topped with a carrot bhaji crust for extra texture. The dish was super tasty and very filling, especially with some poppadums and naan bread on the side!

The Mac n Super Greens is not your ordinary macaroni cheese! The pasta is cooked in a pea and basil sauce with added spinach and broccoli, as well as a kale, ciabatta and pumpkin seed crumb. It was full of flavour but didn’t feel as substantial as the curry, so we’d have it with some protein next time.

Besides creating delicious and affordable food, Higgidy takes great pride in its ethical credentials. Their chicken and eggs are always British and free range, plus their beef is Red Tractor approved and they use sustainable sources for their fish.

The cardboard in the packaging is certified sustainable by the FSC, and the plastic trays are 100% recycled (and recyclable). Higgidy are also very proud to be a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, and the palm oil they use is certified 100% sustainable.

Higgidy Ready to Bake Meals are available to buy from selected Sainsburys stores, with the rest of the Higgidy range widely available in supermarkets.
