Review ~ Real Food Kids Will Love

Real Food Kids Will Love

Chances are, if you’re a parent you’ll have heard of Annabel Karmel. She’s the leading children’s cookery author in the UK and has written 43 books, with her first in 1991 (The Complete Baby and Toddler Meal Planner). Annabel is a mum of three and was awarded the MBE in 2006 for her work in child nutrition.

Her new book, Real Food Kids Will Love, is now available to buy and we’ve had the chance to give it a road test. I’m the first to hold my hands up and say that my son (5) is a cliched fussy eater, avoiding his veggies at all costs and not brilliant at trying new things. His sister on the other hand, will pretty much eat anything, so it’s my son who will be chief taste tester!

What’s in the book?

Real Food Kids Will Love is designed for ages from toddler upwards, which is great for us as a family and means that all the recipes are suitable. It’s divided into chapters, but these are aimed at families, with a Lunchbox and Playdate Snacks chapter alongside Holiday Cooking with Kids. It’s also very encouraging to see a Meat-free and Vegan chapter. The recipes are laid out one to a page, with lots of tempting photos throughout. In fact, if you’d picked it up and didn’t know it was a family recipe book, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was the latest from Jamie or Nadiya.

Does it pass the taste test?

I asked my son too choose what he wanted to cook, and he picked out the Meatballs with Orzo recipe (although we did use spaghetti). It’s an easy straightforward recipe and I even persuaded the kids to make the meatballs themselves. The finished result wasn’t too ‘kiddy’ so I would happily tuck in with the kids for my dinner too. They both loved eating it, and I would definitely make it again. Plus you can freeze the leftovers, so it’s perfect for a quick after school dinner.
